Jan Azar

azar_trophyJan Azar, the winningest basketball coach in the history of the Georgia High School Association, enters her sixth year at Hebron Christian Academy in 2025-26.

In her 29 years of coaching, Azar has amassed a 749-126 record, including a 172-13 mark in six years at HCA.

The Lions finished the 2024-25 campaign with a 29-2 overall record after falling to Holy Innocents' 57-39 in the GHSA Private State Championship. This is the fifth consecutive year the Lions have made a state championship appearance.

In the 2023-24 season, Azar captured her third GHSA 3A State Championship at HCA and 16th in her career. The Lions finished 32-2 on the year with back-to-back state titles. Azar hit her 700th career win mark as head coach. HCA was invited to The Throne National Championships tournament in New Jersey at the end of March. The Lions went on to win the tournament after defeating South Shore 62-51.

Azar added to her trophy in case with a record-breaking season in 2022-23, capturing a record 15th GHSA State Championship and her second at HCA. She led the Lions to a perfect 32-0 record and finished undefeated for the first time in her storied career. During the magical run, HCA won its five state tournament games by an average of 36.2 points.

During her inaugural year at HCA in 2020-21, she guided the Lions to their first girls basketball state championship in program history with a 29-2 record. Sitting with a 6-2 record midway through December, the HCA reeled off 23 consecutive wins, capped by a 51-46 overtime victory against St. Francis inside the Macon Coliseum to capture the 2021 GHSA Class A Private State Championship.

The 2021-22 version of the Lions nearly pulled off back-to-back state championships, but fell to Mount Paran in the state championship game to finish the season at 26-6 overall.

Before making her way to Hebron, Azar was at the helm of the Wesleyan School girls basketball program. During her time at Wesleyan, Azar led the team to new heights as the team earned 13 state titles since she started in 1999 (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018). Those thirteen championships mark the most in Georgia High School basketball history. In 21 seasons at Wesleyan, Azar had an overall record of 571-133.

Azar was inducted into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Azar has helped send 35 Wesleyan players to play college basketball including former athletes like Kaelyn Causwel (Georgia), Erin Hall (Wake Forest), Katie Frerking (Auburn), Paige Mosley (Clemson) and Mikayla Coombs (UConn), and Anne Marie Armstrong (Georgia).

Along with being the head girls basketball coach, Azar is in charge of all Youth Lions activities at HCA.

Azar is married to David and the couple has two children, Nicole and Andrew.
