MACON, Ga. – The Hebron Christian Academy girls basketball team captured its fourth GHSA State Championship in the last six seasons Wednesday afternoon, defeating Holy Innocents' 46-42 inside the Macon Coliseum to bring another state title back to Dacula.
Facing the same opponent as last season's championship matchup, the Lions got revenge on the Bears on the biggest stage, delivering a complete performance to reclaim the state crown.Â
After a sluggish opening quarter that saw Holy Innocents jump out to a 14–6 advantage and extend the lead to double digits on the opening possession of the second half, the Lions finally came to life offensively. Junior
Mia Huckaby jump-started the run with back-to-back three-pointers, and
Gabby Minus connected on a pair of free throws to cap a quick 8–0 spurt and cut the Bears' lead to just two points at 16–14.
Holy Innocents' quickly responded to push the lead back out to four points, but the Lions answered over the next three minutes, scoring 12 straight points to give HCA an eight-point lead before taking a six-point advantage into halftime.
The Lions extended their lead to double-digits in the final minute of the third quarter and held off a furious rally from the Bears in the fourth quarter to secure the four-point victory.
Huckaby led the team with 14 points, including going 3-of-7 from long range and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. Minus finished three points shy of a double-double, collecting 13 rebounds to go with her seven points, while
Alanna Beckham added seven points, nine rebounds and a game-high five steals in the victory.
The championship marks Hebron's fourth girls basketball state crown in the last six seasons and the ninth GHSA State Championship for Hebron Christian across all sports during that same span. The Lions close the season with a 30-1 record and once again leave Macon as state champions, adding another banner to an already decorated era for Hebron athletics.
