MACON, Ga. – The Hebron Christian Academy girls basketball team came up short in a bid for three straight GHSA State Championships, falling 57-39 to Holy Innocents Wednesday afternoon inside the Macon Coliseum.
The shots weren't falling for the Lions early on and Holy Innocents took full advantage, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead, capped by a three-pointer from Makayla Weaver with 4:35 left in the first quarter.
Danielle Osho kept the Lions within striking distance in the first quarter as she scored five straight points, but the Bears took a 19-5 lead after the first frame.
HCA started to claw back in the second quarter as Mia James and Ja'Kerra Butler jumped into the scoring column and cut the Holy Innocents' lead to 11 at the half, trailing 25-14.
The Lions came out of the locker room and started to claw back as an 11-point Holy Innocents' lead shrunk to six on five quick points from HCA, but the Bears had an answer and used a 7-0 run of their own to push the lead out to 34-21.
HCA made one final run in the final minutes and cut the lead to seven points with 5:06 remaining, but Holy Innocents pulled away to secure an 18-point victory.
The Lions shot 39 percent from the field and 61 percent from the charity stripe, but HCA came up empty from long range, going 0-for-19 from behind the arc.
Osho led the team with 16 points and eight rebounds, while James finished in double figures with 12 points and four rebounds.
