DACULA, Ga. - The term "Kardiac Kids" was coined during the 1979-1980 National Football League (NFL) season, when the Cleveland Browns became famous for winning games in last-minute and thrilling ways.Â
The nickname has been given to many teams since the '79 Browns, but in Hebron Christian's case, it's safe to say that the Lion baseball team has become one of the latest squads to earn the label.Â
In their first seven games, the Lions have won six, three coming by way of the walk-off. The most recent came in Hebron's 8-7 win over Greater Atlanta Christian, when infielder Tyler Rogers pushed Hebron into the win column on a walk-off single in Coolray Field, home of the Atlanta Braves' minor-league affiliate Gwinnett Stripers.Â
"I literally have no words … I've never been around a group that can just figure out a way, literally sitting in the third-base box, in the last inning, you just have that feeling that you know," head coach Jonathan Wyman said. "Im unbelievably proud."Â
In the victory of the Spartans last Tuesday, Feb. 24, Rogers and outfielder Austin Dowdy fueled Hebron, Rogers knocking three hits and Dowdy two, both drove in three runs as well.Â
Dowdy, who was the games MVP, set up the walk-off hit from Rogers, lacing a two-run single into left field to tie the game at seven. Rogers won the game in the following at-bat.Â
"Dowdy has been unconscious all year long … the dude figures out a way to get on, and when he's on base, he figures out a way to score," Wyman said.Â
Hebron followed the exciting win in Coolray with a 6-3 win over Winder-Barrow at home last Saturday, Feb. 28. Hebron fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but a three-run bottom-of-the-first paced the bats, and the Lions didn't look back.Â
Holden Meers led the lineup with two runs-batted-in (RBI), while Dowdy, Austen Kitchings, Brodie Lewis and Gus Steve each had one.Â
Rogers and Kitchings each had two hits in the home win.Â
Hebron will be back on the diamond next Tuesday, March 3, when the Lions host Clarke Central (Athens) at 5:30 p.m.Â
