MACON, Ga. – The top-ranked Hebron Christian Academy girls basketball team held off a late rally from Wesleyan to capture the 2024 GHSA AAA State Championship with a 62-60 victory over the 2nd-ranked Wolves inside Macon Coliseum.
The win gives HCA back-to-back GHSA State Championships and three titles in the last four years. The Lions (30-2) finish the season on a 21-game winning streak to hoist the trophy, and are currently on a 57-game winning streak against teams from the state of Georgia.
Head coach Jan Azar adds to her hall of fame career, winning her 16th GHSA State Championship and her third at Hebron in the last four seasons. She has reached the 30-win mark in consecutive seasons for just the second time in her career and the first time since 2006.
Wesleyan held an early 6-5 lead three minutes into the game, but Ja'Kerra Butler sparked a quick 6-0 run to give HCA the lead, an advantage they would never relinquish. The Lions jumped out to a nine-point lead in the second quarter, but the Wolves refused to go away, scoring eight straight points to cut the Hebron lead to just a point at 19-18.
With HCA up by a point with 4:20 left in the second quarter, the offense came to life and finished the first half with a commanding 13-2 run to take a 32-20 lead into the locker room.
After the break, the offense didn't skip a beat, opening the third quarter on an 11-0 run, capped by a bucket from
Aubrey Beckham at the 4:54 mark to give HCA a 43-20 advantage.
Wesleyan cut the Hebron lead to nine points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and a wild sequence in the final minute cut the lead to just two points with 6.2 seconds remaining, but
Aubrey Beckham came up with a huge defensive stop in the final seconds to seal the victory.
After scoring just two points in the first half,
Aubrey Beckham carried the team with 13 points in the second half to lead the team with 15 points in the contest.
Danielle Osho followed with 14 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Hebron shot 41-percent from the field and 27-percent from behind the arc, while Wesleyan finished at 31-percent from the field and 35-percent from long range. HCA outrebounded the Wolves 40-27 and had a 22-16 edge in points in the paint.
In her 28th year as a head coach, Azar has collected 718 career victories and defeats a Wesleyan program where she won 13 state championships in a span of 17 years.
