LaFAYETTE, Ga. – Junior
Evan Rogers recorded back-to-back rounds under par to capture the 2024 GHSA 3A Golf Championship on Tuesday at LaFayette Golf Course.
Rogers makes it a clean sweep in postseason play, winning the Area Tournament in a playoff, before clearing the field by four strokes to capture the first individual golf State Championship in program history.
After opening the tournament with a bogey-free 3-under 69 to take a one stroke lead, Rogers opened up the margin early Tuesday morning, rolling in birdies in three of his first seven holes to take a six stroke lead.
After back-to-back bogeys around the turn, he settled in with four straight pars, before his final birdie of the day on the par 4 15th hole. He tallied pars on the final three holes to secure a five-shot victory and capture the championship at 5-under par with a final round 2-under 70.
In the 80-person field, LaFayette Golf Course surrendered just four rounds under par and two of them belonged to Rogers. In his first 26 holes of the championship, he was bogey free with six birdies and 20 pars.
As a team, HCA finished eighth overall in the tournament as the Lions made their third consecutive appearance at the State Championship.
Aspen Taylor carded a 13-over 85 on Tuesday to finish 49th overall, while Cam Eblen shot a final round 87 to finish in 53rd place.
Freshman
Brody Taylor finished 55th overall,
Christian Foray was 62nd, and
Ethan Kim rounded out the team in 69th place.
Without a senior in the lineup, Head Coach Matt Cunningham will eye a fourth consecutive state championship appearance next spring.
