Lions Finish GHSA 3A State Runner-Up

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga.- The Hebron boys soccer team concluded the season with a great run in the GHSA 3A State Championship game on Wednesday night. The Lions dropped a close game to Columbus High School in overtime 2-1 to be named GHSA 3A State Runner-Ups.

HCA finishes the season with a 15-2-2 record and were named Region Champions for the first time in nine years. This is the second time in school history that the Lions have been named state runner-up. The Blue Devils conclude its season with a 17-3-2 record and earning its first state championship in program history.

Both team had great possessions, but the Blue Devils got on the board first with a goal from Kaleb Robinson with 34 minutes left in the half. The Lions went into the break down 1-0 to Columbus. HCA came out strong in the first half with a goal from Benji Gunji in the first five minutes of the half to tie it up. This marks Gunji's 24th goal on the season.

The team remained scoreless for the rest of regulation which meant overtime. In the span of a 20 minute overtime, the Blue Devils Jackson Briggs, had an open look and scored past the Lion defense after a miscommunication. Neither team was able to get a shot off in the second overtime after multiple good looks for the Lions.

"I hate it for the boys more than anything else, they gave everything they had. I couldn't have asked for anything more, but we had a few mental mistakes. As a coaching staff, we have been telling them that we don't play for ourselves. We play because God has given us the talent and ability to do it. It's a humbling reminder that what we want is one thing, but to live for the Lord is a different one. As long as we are living in eternity with Him, I think we will be alright," said head coach Chad Griffin.
